[AFS4] Disparition annoncée de Flight-Sim.org

Bonjour,

"SageMage" :

Dear All,

The recent messages from Higgy made clear what many suspected: the business model of flight-sim.org Is not sustainable in the long term, especially with the influx of users from the mobile world that may not be used to how the forum ecosystem works.

The core challenge can be described as follows (Higgy correct me if I'm wrong):

8 years of valuable content and community work at risk (I saw mentioned 1.5TB of content)
Current donation model generates ~€200-400/year against ~€1500-2000/year costs (low estimates)
Moderation workload (checking fake uploads, spam) is unsustainable
Only ~15 consistently active contributors out of 5,000+ users
From what I can see, there are a few options on the table:

Option A - historical archive:

Archive all content to read-only state (no new uploads), forums gets "frozen" as it is, if not dismantled.

This allows a graceful migration to greener, sustainable pastures.

Migrate quality content to flightsim.to, official Aerofly forum, GitHub
Create simple static file index on cheap hosting (€50-60/month)
Redirect flight-sim.org domain to new archive
result: this preserves 8 years of work without ongoing moderation burden - in the short term.

Option B - full takeover:

Full takeover, that would require based on my estimates:

10-15 hours/week to dedicate for first 3 months
€1500-2000/year (min) we're willing to invest
the new flight-sim.org community will need to recruit 2-3 other committed co-admins
Completely rebuild the incentive structure
Buy-in from the 15 core contributors before starting
New sustainable funding model (subscription, ads,...)
result: Platform continues with new uploads, but fundamentally different community dynamics required.

Option C - a new hope, similar to Option B:

New curated platform for quality Aerofly content (15-50 trusted contributors)
Built on sustainable model from day 1 (Ko-fi/Patreon supporter tiers)
Modern platform (potentially GitHub + static site, or Discord + simple filehost)
Quality over quantity - no fake upload problem
Requirements:

5-10 core contributors committed to new platform
€200-300/year initial hosting + software costs (shared among founders)
Archive of best content from flight-sim.org (with permission)
Result: smaller but healthier community, sustainable from start. Flight-sim.org content separately archived.

Please let me know what option would you see as more viable, as time is running out.

The short-term goal would be preserving the content, even if dormant for a while.

Afterwards, when the options have been decided and put in motion (Q1 2026) to deliver the content the way the community has decided.

A workgroup interested to push forward the decided option will need to arise and deploy.

Some personal notes:

I come from the automotive world and the aviation sim community was a breath of fresh air when I joined last year.
I have contributed with a couple of addons, participate in the Aerofly forum, so my experience is not that vast as other users.

However, from what I see, It seems to me that the flight-sim.org was a pivotal community for Aerofly 2. Coupling this with the fast consumption of Aerofly Mobile made the flight-sim.org viewed only as an add-on repository and not a community where to exchange (as demonstrated by Higgy's fight to keep the community alive from being bled dry by mosquitoes).

A new business model needs to arise, whatever the option, as it has been greatly demonstrated that the flight-sim.org current model is not working in the long term. The reasons are visible to all.

"Higgy" :

Hello,

sorry, last years .. especially 6 month .... shows : that there is NOT ONE USER ...
who will work for this when I stop it.

So most / all ? options you write .... need manpower...much or less ...
But no one wants to invest ( include me anymore) this time / power.

Its not (first of all) a money problem, its a work / time / manpower problem on first thing.

Money problems could certainly be solved relatively quickly, like some powerusers had shown

last year ( 79 nice Flight-Sim-Users pays  .... for > 5000 users)
And this year I had not to invest more private money ( but the will for my free "work" is at the end now ) :)

And we all know: We all (also me) have also pay for things in live (and everything is getting more and more expensive)
and I have to make other things in my time to pay house / family and life, so my free time to work for no money and the will for it ...
is over now , 8 years are enough )

So the clock is running fast...only 5 weeks ( and 2 of them most are holiday / family time ( also for me )

Server is terminated on 31.12.2025 ( like i write since a half year :) )

So ... if there is no new person/admin ... any of this options ...i think :

sorry, this are no options ..

But really thanks for a try and the will to think / discuss about it.

my conclusion:

I think we will shut down in 5 weeks, because no one wants /can do... make this job what I did.

And additional : 98,4 % of the users dont want to pay for it, and not one person will admin it in future

btw1:

Some users (from China /hongkong) write to me, that there are many illegal chinese
plattforms (they link it to me, but i cant understand / click this pages ) with the
data from some bad chinese users who download it here and upload it there...
for the people who dont donate here ... but they pay there ?!?!

(and they are ashamed of this user)

Thats the bad truth.

btw2: Searching new manpower :

Last "new moderator" from hongkong ... had done NO WORK .. not a second ...

also not after asking for this ... but DELETE many many files on the server :(

Now I am even more tired
